NUTRITION TALKS
Chase Merfeld MS, RD, LN
Let’s talk nutrition and then sprinkle evidenced-based research all over it.
THIS IS ME:
Becoming a Registered Dietitian (RD) was not what I had planned to do at the beginning of my college career. I finished my Biology Pre-Med degree before starting my nutrition journey. At the end of 2011, I had a chance to shadow an RD and she had changed my outlook on my career path. Little did I know that would take me into more schooling, a master's degree, and not to mention more student loan debt! It was all worth it to get to where I am today. I have met some extraordinary RDs, all of whom have helped shape my career in some form or another, and deserve so much credit for what they do every day. I have always had the motto #RDsSaveLives and I truly mean it. If you have a heart attack and you rush to the ER don’t say “I need to see a Dietitian”, that would be crazy but we would appreciate your enthusiasm! However, you should have said that years ago to your Doctor (who had <25 hrs total of nutrition courses and would probably recommend a keto diet to you....eye roll) that you need to change your lifestyle to prevent that heart attack and see a Dietitian!
As a child, I struggled with being overweight and what stigmas that brought to one's self. I still struggle with that today. The stress of our modern world and our extremely busy lives makes caring for ourselves take a back burner. I feel I understand this better than most. Nutrition is always on our minds, should I eat that donut (hell yes! But not every day), should I have that second helping, I should have exercised today... it goes on and on. Unfortunately, those thoughts in our heads make us feel down, distort our Body image, and even get upset with ourselves for not choosing the healthier route.
I have always wanted to blog about nutrition. My interest soared while following a Canadian RD blogger for some time now and she is just a rockstar in the area of nutrition. My goal is to inspire others to look at nutrition as not a fad diet but as a way of living. Do I succeed at this all the time, absolutely not! Because I am human and you know what sometimes you just want chocolate or fast food, but it’s putting everything into perspective about what a healthy lifestyle is. I also want this blog to be fun and informative by using scientific-based evidence with a dash of my own opinion. Will I be right 100% of the time, most likely... not, but I am always open-minded!
